Blogging Again Samsung Omnia

none

Hmm... haven't been blogging for quite some times already. Haven't been having anything interesting in life to blog about though but anyway, here I am login back into my blog to post something.

Just recently, Samsung launched its latest stream of hand phone with its flagship Omnia 2 followed by Samsung Jet and Corby.
I don't consider myself as a tech savvy but I do wanted to get a piece of these latest tech gadget too but then, I just can't make myself to fork out RM2000 for a hand phone just at yet though I wanted to change my 3 years old SE w810i. I was browsing around for a few models and shortlisted a few specs and prices. At the end of it, I made up my mind that I'm going for the old Samsung Omnia model. Though it consider as an obsolete model by now since the launch of Omnia 2 but I still like the phone though.

samsung sgh i900 Omnia

Ya know, I have been asking several hand phone shop around the town and quite some interesting impression on how peoples going around on this hand phone business. Initially when I was asking for the old Omnia model, the reply were mostly that this model is obsolete and no stock anymore. I just take it that they don't have the resource to get a piece of this model so, fine, I'll ask somewhere else.

Thinking that those small shop on the street may not be able to source for this obsolete model, I'm going for a well known shop in Jusco. Well they do have the model on shelve but the price was a little bit high. The staff quote me RM1599 nett. No discount, no special gift, no less no nothing. I told the fella that the market price is much lower than RM1599 now. He insist that the price is reasonable and says that their price list stated the same. Well, I don't know when is their price list got updated but it sure outdated. So, the next time you see people quoting you price from a bunch of papers, tell them to check out from the supplier instead. Electronics stuff price change every few days and you won't know if the supplier slash down the price just yesterday.

So I surf to the next shop at Jusco for the model. This time, the staff told me that they have the model. The price, RM 1880! WTF I say. I told him that even the ads put up by Samsung on newspaper quote RM1599 and the market price certainly lower than that.
'Oh really ar, 1599 heh, ok lah I'll sell you 1599, want it!', he reply me with a sinister eye sight. You see, this is what you get from a staff who care less if their employer get to sell anything. They only wish to seat there on the counter from 10am till 10pm and get the pay at the end of month.

After asking around for another few more shops, it is either they could not get the stock or quoting me with an exhorbitant price. And sumore they are so proud with their so (out)updated price list. So sickening I telya.

Finally I came across a shop that willing to get me the phone ship right from KL since there are no stock available from supplier in Ipoh. The price is slightly higher but it is still below 1.4k and I got it a deal right away. Hmm, duno why but I felt like I was so obsessed about this phone that I must have it.

So what is so cool about this phone that I wanted it so much? First off, its a touch screen phone, like a smart phone. I see more and more people are going into this kind of phone nowdays and even a cheap CSL phone has touch screen. So, I guess I'll be out if I don't get a touch screen one lol.

Then, this phone is run on Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1. It may not be something that I would praised about but I would like to try something new, something complex than of a normal hand phone system. And indeed, it is really complicated to get used to the Windows Mobile thing. It would take time remember all the necessary functions which scattered around the system and group it together. Guess I'll be busy playing around with the phone system for months to get used to it. Such complicated system will certainly require some amount of horse power to run, the Samsung Omnia operate on a 624MHz processor but lag is still observed on certain point and responsiveness is sometimes slow.

I like the Office Mobile and it is one of the main point for this phone. I could work on Excel, Word, PowerPoint and access email using Outlook with the Office Mobile. The Excel is very useful and it has most of the basic function of a real MS Excel software on a PC so I can create and edit Excel files anytime anywhere from my hand phone.

Since I like taking photo so much, I was seeking for a phone with a good camera on it. This Omnia comes with a 5 Megapixel camera with LED flash light. The photo quality was good and it has many preset mode onboard. Though, its auto focus is a bit slow, slower than my SE W810i.

Ya know, my friends has been bragging of how cool it is surfing the internet from their hand phone via WiFi. Well, now I see how convenience it is but having the webpage loaded into this 3.2 inch screen was a little awkward for me. It is perfect to seek information and read news on the internet using hand phone but for more complicated activities which require a lots of typing and clicking, that just doesn't work out very well.

There's a function about this phone that curious me a lot. The Omnia comes with built-in GPS! But then, I don't think it is bundle with a GPS software and map. At least I haven't discover it yet. Anybody have any idea how I can make use of this GPS thingy on my Omnia? i heard Garmin makes a good GPS software on this phone though but I have no idea how to get one.

This phone has 8Gb of onboard memory for storage and another micro SD card slot for another 16Gb memory. Guess I'll get the memory card once I use up most of the onboard memory.

Pros
OS: Lots of function, windows based, drag copy and paste file and content.
Camera: Good photo / video quality, many preset mode.
MS Office Mobile, WiFi, GPS, Geo Tagging, 8Gb + 16Gb storage space.

Cons
OS: horsepower crazy OS~lag, could be somewhat complicated.
Camera: Auto Focus slow.
Stylus is separate unit.

Hi there,
I suppose it's too late now that you have already bought the phone but have you tried ebay? I bought a similar phone off ebay a few months ago and only paid AUD$325. THe GPS works fine but I had to buy the maps for it. I only have maps for OZ and NZ and am looking for maps for Msia. Good luck and enjoy the phone.
Cheers,
Gordy

Memory sure is becoming cheaper these days. I'm curious as to when we will eventually hit the ratio of 1c to 1 Gig.

I wait for the day when I will finally be able to afford a 20 TB hard drive, haha. But for now I will be satisfied with having a 32 gig Micro SD Card in my R4i.

(Submitted using NewPost v2 for R4i Nintendo DS.)
