I had it once few years ago when it was still a 56k dial up. I didn't unplug the phone line to the modem after I use the pc and the next day I tried to get online, things doesn't happen accordingly!
I tried to open up the CPU Casing to see if there is anything wrong to the modem and Bingo! It's dead. I could see some of the components got burned already. Nothing else I could do except to get another modem.
Well, I guess that the first and hopefully the last time I have a modem strike by lightning. Always have to remember to unplug the phone line from the modem after use and don't surf when there are thunderstorm.

I believe most of us have experienced getting our modems fried by lightning at least once. Mine happened to my modem in the pre-broadband years. Currently, I do not unplug the phone cable anymore unless there is a really bad "lightning party".
