Leaving the chaotic Shanghai

It’s the final day of our Korea Shanghai trip. The traffic condition in Shanghai is really chaotic as it is going through a major facelift for the upcoming EXPO 2010 next year.

Time just goes by so fast that our trip comes to the final day. Our flight back home is scheduled at 9.00pm so we still have a day exploring this metropolis.

river at shanghai urban place

Shanghai development is way faster than any part of the world. New skyscraper were build on just any piece of land they could acquired and the urban area just keep on expanding. But even so, their river was way cleaner than our river in the urban area back home. I guess China government was really serious on tackling pollution problem but even so, the social civic awareness plays a great role in maintaining pollution and environment cleanliness.

The itinerary for the final day is seemingly simple but time after time we got stuck into massive traffic problem in the heart of Shanghai. EXPO 2010 is a grand event coming up next year which is held in Shanghai and the city is currently renovating itself into a brand new metropolitan for the sake of the event. All major roads and highways in the city were dug and re-tarmac and many more infrastructures were repaired and constructed.

shanghai traffic congestion

The entire Shanghai is in chaos now and I see we were here at the wrong time. Moving one point to another point within Shanghai takes hours to reach and we have several places to visit today. Most of our time was wasted into the traffic problem rather than visiting places.

We took a walk at the People’s Square in the heart of Shanghai city before heading to the Museum for a visit.

One place that we always get to visit on any China trip is the Chinese medicine shop a.k.a Pau Shu Tang or Tong Ren Tang. I’ve been to China trice and have repeated this routine every time there.

soak foot

Firstly you will get treated with a free session of reflexology. Yes, it is FREE. They will give you a pail of this freaking hot murky colored water to soak you blardy foot before they give you some reflexology massage. Along the process, they will have these doctors looking fella explaining about their medicine products. They would also check your pulse and give you some advice regarding you health being and of course suggesting some medicine to you.

In the past, there is also a live demonstration where a man a.k.a stunt man touches his hand onto a red hot burning steel chain. He will then show you his first degree burn palm with a damn hurt facial expression and finally comes the savior of the day. The ultimate Chinese medicine cream called Pau Shu Ling. Just apply some of the cream onto the burnt palm and the burn will eventually heal. And the fella will smile to you again like he will live happily ever after.

They still promoting this same ole magic cream to the tourist but then, the stunt demonstration are no longer available. Probably they couldn’t hire anymore hand for them to burn anymore lol.

Well, I did actually bought one of those magic cream several years ago and until today, I didn’t remember if I ever did open the container. While it was shocking to see the stuntman burn his hand, I actually get a burn on my money instead.

shanghai chen huang miao

Just before we head to the airport, we took a short visit to the Chen Huang Miao temple commercial center. Due to the massive traffic problem in the city, we were left with a little time to goes around the place.

These ain’t not Chinese temple or a holy shrine. It is all commercial buildings with shops and restaurants all over the place. It lit up into a very beautiful shopping district at night.

There is a famous Xiao Long Pao a.k.a Little Dragon Bun restaurant in this area and usually there will be a long queue at the take away counter. I did try the bun last time and it was somewhat delicious. This time, guess I don’t have the time privilege to queue up on the lane anymore. There are many restaurants in the area selling various cuisines and snacks. It’s a food haven.

That’s it. My eight day trip to Korea and Shanghai has finally comes to the end. Got up to the coach for the last time in Shanghai heading towards Pudong International Airport and along the way, looking at the beautiful night scenery of the busy city and of course, stuck in traffic jam.
