Police Station Curry Mee Xin Quan Fang

Ipoh's famous Police Station Curry Mee which located near the new town police station, Xin Quan Fang is deemed one of the best curry mee in Ipoh.

In my childhood days, people refers police station to curry rice as if one's get caught into the police station, he/she will be treated with curry rice. Over the years, I get to know that this is no myth or empty talking. In fact, it is true that those who held in the police station lock up will be treated with curry rice. No, not like those nasi ganja or Indian Curry rice. One of my friend who had experience of it mention that even dogs turn away from the rice. It smell wierd and it taste terrible.

Well, lets forget about the awful story instead, let me talk about this curry mee which is outside the police station instead. It's one of the best curry mee in the town. Located near by the Ipoh's new town police station, Restoran Xin Quan Fang is a heaven for curry noodle fans. You hardly find a place to seat in the peak hours here.

Hmmm... it seems to be very quiet looking at the restaurant from across the street. Well, it is only 7.30 in the morning and they're still in the process of getting ready for business. Somehow, patrons has already occupied several tables there waiting for the delicious curry mee.
As for me, I was only here for a take away. So, got to wait patiently.

Now, no wonder that the place get crowded easily. You can actually count the tables with your finger.

Looking them preparing their famous curry mee. The aunty there will be busy preparing the noodle while the bro busy whopping up the prawns, chicken meat and so on.

The five-ringgit-curry-mee. Extra noodle and extra stuff. The cursingly-delicious curry soup were blended with fragrant herbs and spices. I would say it's spices taste was a little overly for me but it was still nice. It's rare to find such nicely blended curry soup.

The location map to the famous Ipoh curry mee at Xin Quan Fang Restaurant. Its not difficult to find this place if you know where is Ipoh's new town police station. If you still don't know where, simply ask any police you stumble upon. But remember, don't get into trouble or you will be treated with curry rice I mentioned inside the police station instead.

This is my favourite curry place in Ipoh. I come here almost every week for breakfast. The specialty here is the "cham liu" (not mixed meat but chopped meat) where you ask the guy to put the meat in a separate bowl. It comes with a delicious garlic, curry dipping sauce. You will need to have at least 2 person eating because it's a lot. For 2 people, the price is around RM 16 for 2 bowls of noodles and 1 bowl of meat (prawns, bbq pork, stewed pork, chicken, some innards, taugeh). Worth the price!

Do you still remember there was a Induan Curry Rice stall near the Old Tanjung Rambutan Bus station??? If yes! Do they still operate in the same location.

If you know, pls let me know, I want to try them when next time I am Ipoh. I only remember from my childhood memory!!!

Thanks in advance. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family.

Wow!! it is now up to Rm5/bowl already... even more expensive than KL's... But one thing that cant deny is the taste from XCH is darn good and as per my personal tastebud opinion, most of the curry mees that I have tried in Penang and KL, were not as good as this one (some considered bad-sui wong wong + bak sai sai...)... I missed the 'gau' curry very much and wish to try whenever I come back to my hometown-ipoh =)

This is the famous Ipoh curry mee which I have first tasted in 1977. I was very impressed when first trying it. Over the years I never missed it when I was in Ipoh on work or just passing through. On one occasion I drove my friends from Singapore when they were in KL - all the way to Ipoh to try this famous laksa!
It is spicy and very original! Not much or very little santan or coconut milk. The curry sauce and its red color are very inviting.
I have tried many laksa or curry mee stalls all over Malaysia - be it KL, Penang, Seremban or even Melbourne where I am residing now - no other stall can come near to this marvellous curry mee stall in Ipoh.
The home made roast meat, prawns, chicken meat etc in the curry sauce is superb!! I like the idea of squeezing a piece of quat chai over the curry.
When I was back in KL 18 months ago my relatives took me to one of the best curry mee stalls in PJ but the quality is way off when compared to this Ipoh stall.
It has been more than 30 years since visiting this curry mee stall and the boss and wife still recognised me because I was eating his curry mee almost every morning 30 years ago!!

There is a curry mee shop too in Canning Garden where mother and daughter run the stall. Darn good. Should give it some attention. Another one is old town corner shop. We call him 'fu hei lo' because dam grumpy, especially when business is good. And his business is always good. Now his son takes orders and he just works on our mee. I will post the names of these places next time I am in Ipoh. Frankly, this police station is also tasty but I find very oily. Just my thots.
